depravity

depravity - noun - moral perversion; impairment of virtue and moral principles; a corrupt or degenerate act or practice.

You know, like the Democrats. Okay, sorry, I'll refrain from the political statements. I just couldn't resist that one. Anyway, this is sort of a dovetail on Natalie's uncommented word theme from earlier.

There's a story (which may even be true) about a congressional staffer who was giving some Russian visitors a tour of the Capital. When asked about our party system, he said, "In this country we have two parties, a Stupid Party and an Evil Party. I am proud to be a member of the Stupid Party. From time to time we do something both stupid and evil; that's called bipartisanship." I myself long preferred to be thought stupid rather than evil. Now I don't care much for either. (I recall Romans's relief on the death of Tiberius. His successor was Caligula.)

The new Speakerette is a "devout" Catholic who nevertheless defends the most extreme forms of abortion and supports homosexual marriage (which really should be an oxymoron). "Depravity" sounds like a good fit.

Come to think of it, the skanky Amanda Marcotte, who I mentioned in an earlier post, is handling "devout" Baptist John Edwards's website. I wonder what Andrew Jackson would think if he could see the party he founded today.
