Isn't forte the opposite of piano? I was going to try and beat wolfjb to the punch, but couldn't find a proper definition. Am I crazy?

Delayed reaction from a jackleg musician in forced retirement: you're correct. Forte (loud) is indeed the opposite of piano (soft). The pianoforte, invented in the early 18th century, was intended to be a sort of harpsichord capable of being played both softly and loudly.
